Citizen is a grindcore band from Santa Cruz, California, USA. Politics: The members of Citizen oppose the U.S. government and its policies, both foreign and domestic; and while they do not propose an answer (and its members, indeed, have varying political viewpoints), it does, however, lean toward anarchism and political concepts aligned with various features of libertarian socialism: equality for all, cooperative mutualism rather than capitalist markets, syndicalism and trade unionism, ultimate liberty and responsibility. Music: Citizen plays grindcore metal with hardcore punk elements, in the vein of such acts as Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Assuck, Discharge, Brutal Truth, with a penchant for "major" tonalities and pastiches of global national anthems, regional folksongs, and war hymns. Citizen's 2005 full-length album Manifesto for the New Patriot was released on the now defunct UK label Code:Breaker Records, of which "The People's War," "Ambush in the Afternoon," and "Pledge to a Fallen Comrade" are all featured songs. Citizen is now signed to Relapse Records and is in the studio recording their follow up full-length album, tentatively titled Of Rebels and Martyrs, a concept album of thematically linked songs. History: Citizen formed in 2004 when Matt Widener recruited local punk musicians and long time friends Derrick Psaros on bass and Mike Mihalik on drums. They cut a quick demo within the month and soon started writing their full-length album Manifesto for the New Patriot, which was released on Code:Breaker Records in 2005. Citizen took a year hiatus while Widener resumed work with his band Cretin, undertook various production projects, and finished his literature degree; and Psaros finished his linguistics studies at university. Relapse Records signed Citizen in 2006 after Code:Breaker released the band from their contract due to financial constraints. Merchandise: Citizen is currently out of band merchandise.
